Altrusa members prepare packets for READ ON program

READ ON is a program that encourages parents to continue their education and to read to young children.

Altrusa of Spartanburg has a long history of service projects that have addressed literacy in our county. Most recently we adopted the READ ON project where we provide information to new parents about the importance of early education.

To encourage reading to babies, our club assembles and distributes a package of books and public service literature to new mothers through the Spartanburg County Health Department.

We know that a child's chances of growing up as a literate adult will be improved if we can increase the educational level of new parents, especially the mother. Some of the literature in our package is about educational opportunities for adults. Participants in READ ON have learned how to write a resume and conduct a job search, and some have received help in applying to colleges.
